Affandi (1907 – May 23, 1990) was born in Cirebon, West Java, as the son of R. Koesoema, who was a surveyor at a local sugar factory. Affandi finished his upper secondary school in Jakarta, but he forsook his study for the desire to become an artist. Affandi taught himself how to paint since 1934. His father is R. Koesoema, a measuring technician at sugar factory in Ciledug. Affandi got his last education at AMS-B in Jakarta. Affandi married with Maryati when he was 26 years old, actually in 1933. Maryati is a woman born in Bogor. They have a daughter who also later become a famous painter like her father. The name of their daughter is Kartika.
Before he began painting, Affandi had ever once become a teacher and also ever become a ticket man at local movie theatre in Bandung. This job was not long enough to made Affandi stayed inbecause he was more interested in painting. At the 30th of his age, Affandi joined Lima Bandung community, which was the community for five Bandung painters. There were Hendra Gunawan, Barli, Sudarso, and Wahdi and also Affandi as a leader. This community had a great contribution in developing arts and painting in Indonesia. This community was different with Persatuan Ahli Gambar Indonesia (Persagi) in 1938. This community was a learning together forum and a sharing forum among the painters.
In 1943, Affandi held his single exhibition at Poetera Building, Jakarta which also being colonized by a Japanese army. Empat Serangkai -- consist of Ir. Soekarno, Drs. Mohammad Hatta, Ki Hajar Dewantara, and Kyai Haji Mas Mansyur-- lead Poetera Culture Section (Seksi Kebudayaan Poetera--Poesat Tenaga Rakyat) to take the contributions. In this Poetera Culture Section, Affandi act as a manager and S. Seodjojono act as responsibilitor, who held a direct contact with Bung Karno (the nickname for Presiden Soekarno).
